Day 67: Deuteronomy 5-7; Mark 12:1-28

So much of Scripture is a call to remember. Deuteronomy (literally, 'Second Law'...not a new one, but a repetition) recites the statutes and recalls Israel's history. Deuteronomy 5 is the most famous 'Law' repeated...who could forget the Ten Commandments? Well? The famous, "Hear, O Israel!" (The Shema - Deuteronomy 6:4-5) which is recited three times daily, was a reminder to keep first things first. It is immediately followed by practices that keep the whole family (both biological and national) reminded of Who God is and who they are in Him...write them down, put them in obvious places that you can see in your coming and going, talk about them all the time. Remember! Live! Love God and His Word! Why? This is much more than ritual. It is relationship. It is blessing. It is power. It is posterity. It is life. Remember!

There was probably no more stinging accusation that could be made against Israel's religious leaders than this:  "Jesus spoke to them, 'Isn’t this the reason why you’re mistaken: you don’t know the Scriptures or the power of God?'"  (Mark 12:24, CSB). The Sadducees prided themselves in being students of the first five books of the Old Testament. Jesus told them if they truly remembered the Law, they would understand the power of God for life and eternity, because they would be living in the presence of God daily. They didn't even know what they thought they did. They did not remember.

We live in a world that has largely forgotten God. You and I do not have to fall prey to this ignorance of choice, this spiritual amnesia. Make remembering a priority. Spend time daily in the Word with God. Take advantage of moments offered to remember....to talk about God, His Word, His presence and promise and blessing...with family, with God's Family, with any hungry soul. Watch how living God's way blesses us, how His presence fills us and guides us and keeps us. Remember! Then, remind those around you! This is the path of blessing!
