But a Samaritan who was on a journey came upon him; and when he saw him, he felt compassion.

Just what the doctor ordered! In Luke 10:33, Jesus is sharing the story of the Good Samaritan. Dr. Luke makes a point in this passage that speaks to us still today: the Samaritan saw and had compassion. Compassion isn’t just a feeling—it is also an action. The world may feel sorry, but Christians are compelled by compassion to act—even toward those we do not know, or maybe some we don’t even like.
Part of this story highlights the reality that Jews and Samaritans did not like each other. Yet here a Samaritan has eyes to see someone in need. He sees someone who is very different from him—and he acts. He is not concerned with what others will think. He is not concerned with what it might cost him. He knows it isn’t safe.
Compassion isn’t safe. It isn’t about us, and it can be costly. Maybe that is exactly what the doctor ordered.

Give us eyes to see and courage to act so that we may bless our communities.
