2026 Reading Plan Reflections - Day 2

God Shows Up

“Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.””
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭1‬:‭19‬-‭21‬ ‭NIV‬‬
Matthew's gospel opens with the foundation we considered yesterday - generation after generation of people whose lives were touched by God's presence, provision, and promise. As dry as genealogies can be, looking at the names reveals the diversity of those for whom God shows up - people throughout history that relate directly to our experience - no word is wasted in telling God's story.
Joseph comes from that history and firm foundation. A descendant of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Judah - stories we know well that lead us to King David. And from David, through other names we recognize as kings from the history of Israel and Judah. Joseph knew the history and the law.
It was this knowledge and foundation that allowed him to trust when God showed up and said, "Do not be afraid." Joseph is part of God's plan from the beginning. His obedience and faithfulness are an integral part of the story.
How can we respond like Joseph did to allow God's plan to come to fruition in our own lives?
