The storm is over, but Paul's trials are not. After surviving the shipwreck, the travelers finally reach the island of Malta. The islanders welcome them with unusual kindness, building a fire to warm these cold, exhausted strangers. As Paul gathers sticks for the fire, a viper bites his hand. The people immediately assume they know the story. He must be a murderer, they conclude. Justice has finally caught up with him.

Then... nothing happens. Paul shakes the snake into the fire and continues serving. The same crowd that moments earlier had condemned him now swings to the opposite extreme, deciding he must be a god. Their opinions change in an instant, but the truth about Paul never changed at all.

Luke has shown this pattern repeatedly throughout Acts. Paul has been accused, beaten, imprisoned, rejected, and misunderstood. Yet every attempt to silence him has only opened another door for the gospel. Now even the sea and the serpent—the ancient biblical symbols of chaos and evil—have done their worst and failed. God keeps His promise. Paul arrives safely because God's mission has not reached its destination yet.

Instead of focusing on the miracle of surviving the snakebite, Luke quickly moves to something even greater. Paul begins praying for the sick, healing many across the island. What began as a shipwreck becomes an unexpected season of ministry. That's often how God works.

We sometimes assume difficult circumstances mean God's plans have been interrupted. Acts reminds us they may simply have taken a different route. A delay, a disappointment, or an unexpected hardship doesn't mean God has abandoned His purposes. Sometimes those very moments become the place where His grace is most clearly displayed.

There's another quiet lesson here as well. Paul doesn't spend time defending himself against the islanders' changing opinions. He doesn't argue when they accuse him or bask in their admiration when they praise him. He keeps serving.

Faithfulness isn't measured by public opinion. Some days people will misunderstand us. Other days they may praise us more than we deserve. Neither response should determine our identity. Like Paul, we're called to remain steady because our confidence rests in Christ, not in the shifting judgments of others.

As Acts nears its conclusion, Luke leaves us with growing confidence that nothing—not storms, snakes, prisons, or powerful governments—can stop what God has begun. The risen Christ continues to build His Church, and every obstacle becomes another opportunity for the gospel to advance.

Think about one situation that feels like an interruption or setback today. Instead of asking, "Why is this happening?" ask, "Lord, how might You use this for Your purposes?" Pray with open hands, looking for an opportunity to serve someone even in the middle of your own difficulty.
