Day 157: 2 Chronicles 19-22; John 15:18-16:15
Jesus to disciples: "I still have many things to tell you, but you can’t bear them now." (John 16:12)
Information overload...TMI. There is so much out there that it can easily just become noise, and the thing about noise is that it can be tuned out. But, what if that information is life or death? Then, there are those who seem genuine in their concern that the truth be heard. I think of a recent public service campaign calling us to get the facts before we decide what is real, what is true...verify. In my skeptical brain my mind goes back to the 'fact checkers' of recent history who it turns out were funded by organizations with an agenda, and so overlooked, twisted, or denied any 'fact' that might not suit their narrative. Then, consider those 'news outlets' that were funded by advertisers who wanted their narrative promoted...what happened to news you can trust? And how do you and I decide what is fact or fiction, especially when it really matters? One can only retreat from the world for so long...we must live.
As Jesus looked at those disciples He was instructing in last things before His death, they must have had the look of utter confusion on their faces...too much to take in. What He was saying was truly life or death, but He knew they had reached their capacity. There is more. That will come. That Jesus did not leave us to our own devices is marvelous. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth, and He will guide us into all truth. There is no new truth, just a deeper understanding of the truth that already is. What He illuminates for us will always be consistent with the Word of God and with Jesus, the Word Who is the Truth. The Spirit also has the capacity to give us guidance in this world with a narrative that is not all fact, despite its claims to the contrary. The secret is to live in communion with Him. Start with Jesus. Walk in the Spirit. Live in the truth. It's a journey of learning, and as you see from the verse at the start, we have a patient Lord.
