Day 243: Psalms 142-144; 1 Corinthians 10:22-11:1

Did Paul just say what I think he said? I want you to pattern your lives after me, just as I pattern mine after Christ (1 Corinthians 11:1, TPT). There is a good chance you and I have a negative association with the word 'mimic' (unless it's a part of someone's stand-up routine). However, that is the root of the word that Paul actually uses. The lexicon says it means 'to strive to be like, imitate.'  As is often the case, in a few words, Paul preaches a sermon. The first word can be translated: "Be becoming..." The call is not static, or an expectation of instant arrival. This is an ongoing journey of growing into that which we are striving to become. Paul's language also emphatically states his journey and destiny: Christ. In essence he is saying: "I have my eyes fixed on Jesus! I want to know Him inside and out and become exactly like Him in every way. Run this race with me to the finish line." Imitate me, as I also imitate Christ (1 Corinthians 11:1, CSB).

By the way, I am certain you have recalled Paul's related (more expanded) challenge to the Ephesian Church: Therefore, be imitators of God, as dearly loved children, and walk in love, as Christ also loved us and gave himself for us, a sacrificial and fragrant offering to God (Ephesians 5:1-2, CSB).
