2026 Reading Plan Reflections - Day 58

Boxes Checked or Hearts Changed?

“You ignore God’s commandment while holding on to rules created by humans and handed down to you.” Mark 7:8 CEB
The religious leaders were upset about handwashing. Not hygiene. Ritual cleansing. Procedure. Tradition. A box that needed to be checked.

Jesus doesn’t dismiss the idea of obedience; He goes deeper. The issue isn’t that practices exist. The issue is when practices replace submission. When human systems become more important than God’s actual command.

That’s a hard word. Because it’s possible to look spiritually disciplined while resisting God’s authority in the heart. It’s possible to defend tradition while neglecting love, mercy, generosity, or repentance. It’s possible to keep the form and lose the fire.

True transformation doesn’t come from external compliance. It comes from surrender.
Practices matter — Scripture reading, prayer, gathering for worship. They shape us. But they only shape us when they lead to obedience. When they become substitutes for obedience, they hollow us out.

Jesus is after more than procedural faithfulness. He is after a submitted heart.

Faith In Action

Examine one spiritual practice in your life. Ask: Is this drawing me into deeper obedience, or has it become a box I check? Invite the Spirit to realign your heart.
Lord, guard me from empty religion.
Shape my heart to submit fully to Your authority and Your love.
