2026 Reading Plan Reflections - Day 63

A Different Kind of Greatness

“Whoever wants to be first must be least of all and the servant of all.” Mark 9:35
“There’s a war on.”

That line from N.T. Wright cuts through a lot of the noise surrounding modern spirituality. Following Jesus is not primarily about personal fulfillment or finding a path that simply meets our felt needs. It is about participating in what God is doing in the world — and that work unfolds in the middle of a real spiritual battle.

The disciples, however, were having a different conversation.

While Jesus spoke about His coming suffering, they argued about who among them was the greatest. It’s a painfully human moment. While the mission of God moves forward, we often drift toward comparison, status, and recognition.

Jesus responds with a completely different vision of greatness:
“Whoever wants to be first must be least of all and the servant of all.” (Mark 9:35)

In God’s kingdom, greatness is not measured by position but by posture. It is not about climbing higher but kneeling lower. The war being fought is not for influence or recognition — it is for souls, for redemption, for the advance of the gospel.

Those who answer Christ’s call enter something larger than themselves. Like those who answer a call to military service, they understand that the mission matters more than personal advancement. They serve, sacrifice, and endure not for medals or applause but because the cause is worthy.

The same is true in the kingdom of God. We decrease. Christ increases. And obedience becomes the quiet strategy by which the kingdom advances.

Faith In Action

Look for one opportunity today to serve someone in a way that costs you something — time, comfort, recognition, or convenience. Do it quietly, as an act of obedience to Christ.
Lord Jesus, reshape my understanding of greatness.
Teach me to serve faithfully so that Your kingdom may advance and Your name be lifted high.
