2026 Reading Plan Reflections - Day 64
Unyielding Hearts
“He wrote this commandment for you because of your unyielding hearts.” Mark 10:5, CEB
Jesus’ words cut deeper than the legal debate that prompted them. The religious leaders wanted a ruling about divorce — a technical answer, a procedural boundary. But Jesus goes straight to the real issue: the human heart. Laws about divorce, He says, were given because hearts had already hardened. That truth echoes throughout the entire passage.
Right after the conversation about marriage, children appear. And the contrast is striking. In the first-century world, children were often overlooked, treated more as dependents than disciples. But Jesus pulls them close and says the kingdom belongs to those who receive it like they do — with humility, trust, and openness. Soft hearts.
Then comes the rich young ruler. A man who seems to have everything going for him — morality, discipline, opportunity. Yet when Jesus invites him to let go of his wealth and follow, he walks away. Not because the path is unclear, but because his heart is still attached to something else. Hard hearts again.
The thread through all of it is the same. The real battle is not simply about rules, possessions, or status. It’s about what holds our hearts. The enemy is always ready to use the things of this world — comfort, identity, security, ambition — to pull us away from the Light.
But Jesus keeps pointing us back to the kingdom. Receive it like a child. Let go of what binds you. Follow the One who came not to be served, but to serve.
That final truth — which we’ll see clearly tomorrow — sits at the center of Mark’s Gospel. Jesus gives His life as a ransom for many. And those who follow Him are called to the same posture: surrendered hearts, open hands, faithful obedience.

Faith In Action
Ask God to reveal anything your heart may be clinging to — security, comfort, status, or control. Name it honestly in prayer and practice releasing it to Him today.
Lord Jesus, soften what has become hard in my heart.
Teach me to trust You with open hands and follow wherever You lead.
Teach me to trust You with open hands and follow wherever You lead.
