Day 76: Deuteronomy 29-30; Mark 16
by Jonathan Merki on March 17th, 2023
"When all these things happen to you...and you come to your senses..." (Deuteronomy 30:1)Hope! Optimism! God is real and realistic. He knows the deceitful hearts of His children and their wandering affections. He knows! He knows that they will abandon 'first love' and live in the land driven by sensory satisfaction. He knows the outcome that sin begets. He knows the desperate cry of lost, broken a...  Read More

Day 75: Deuteronomy 28; Mark 15:21-47
by Jonathan Merki on March 16th, 2023
How low can you go? Reading the depths to which God's people would go when they abandoned Him (exactly what they did) is repulsive (Deuteronomy 28). Watching the cowards abuse Jesus in word and deed before and during the crucifixion...all from a place of their perceived safety is disgusting. They were free to move and spout their venom, He was nailed to a cross, beaten and bloodied by their abuse....  Read More

Day 74: Deuteronomy 26-27; Mark 15:1-20
by Jonathan Merki on March 15th, 2023
Just yesterday I had a conversation with someone about the controversial person named Judas Iscariot. Did he have a choice? Was he redeemable? Isolate a passage and the conclusion about 'the son of perdition' (John 17:12) is inevitable. However, watch his life, read his interactions with Jesus and see his options...the same ones the other disciples had. Today we read: "The one who accepts a bribe ...  Read More

Day 73: Deuteronomy 23-25; Mark 14:53-72
by Jonathan Merki on March 14th, 2023
"For many were giving false testimony against him, and the testimonies did not agree." (Mark 14:56, CSB).Do you remember our conversation about witnesses from two days ago? If those who were so committed to the letter of the law, i.e. the Scribes and Pharisees, kept the whole counsel of the law, they would have crucified those false witnesses along with Jesus. Truth be told, they were violating th...  Read More

Day 72: Deuteronomy 20-22; Mark 13:32-52
by Jonathan Merki on March 13th, 2023
'Stauros' is the Greek word for 'stake' and is the word used for the instrument of Jesus' death. In fact, anyone bearing a 'stauros' had their sentence passed, and was carrying the instrument of their death to the appointed place of their judgment...a dead person walking. It was the cruelest form of capital punishment in the Roman world, so much so, that Roman citizens sentenced to death could not...  Read More

Day 71: Deuteronomy 14-19; Mark 13:14-14:31
by Jonathan Merki on March 12th, 2023
What would happen if witnesses would be held to a high standard of accountability? In an age where words are cheap and self-promotion is not only considered the norm, but even promoted as praiseworthy, the Old Testament practice of two, or three, witnesses verifying facts, seems dangerous. Imagine the witnesses having to 'throw the first stone' of a capital crime ruling, to make the awful outcome ...  Read More
