2026 Reading Plan Reflections - Day 198

Finishing Well

Acts 20:17–38

“But nothing, not even my life, is more important than my completing my mission. This is nothing other than the ministry I received from the Lord Jesus: to testify about the good news of God's grace.” Acts 20:24 CEB

As Paul gathers the elders from Ephesus for one final meeting, his words sound different than the speeches we've heard throughout Acts. He isn't persuading skeptics or defending the gospel before hostile crowds. He's speaking to people he loves—leaders he has served alongside for years. This is a farewell.

Paul doesn't know exactly what awaits him in Jerusalem. He knows hardship is coming, but not its precise shape. Yet uncertainty doesn't become an excuse for hesitation. Instead, it sharpens his focus.

“But nothing, not even my life, is more important than my completing my mission. This is nothing other than the ministry I received from the Lord Jesus: to testify about the good news of God's grace” (Acts 20:24).

That isn't the language of a man chasing success. It's the testimony of someone whose life has been shaped by grace.

Paul looks back on his ministry without triumphalism. He reminds the elders that he served with humility, endured hardship, proclaimed the whole counsel of God, and never treated ministry as a way to enrich himself. His concern has never been building a reputation. It has always been pointing people to Jesus.

Then he turns his attention to those who will remain after he is gone. They are to shepherd God's people faithfully, stay alert against distorted teaching, and remember that the church belongs to Christ, who purchased it with His own blood. Their confidence isn't in Paul remaining with them, but in "God and the word of his grace."

When faithful leaders move on, when seasons change, when the future feels uncertain, God's grace remains. The church has always belonged to God.

As I read Paul's words, one phrase continues to echo in my own heart: finish well. None of us knows what the next chapter holds. We don't know what tomorrow's diagnosis may reveal, what opportunities may open, or which plans may never unfold. There are moments when that uncertainty feels heavy. But, Paul's life reminds us that faithfulness has never depended on knowing the entire path ahead. It depends on taking the next obedient step.

Paul wasn't trying to control the future. He was determined to remain faithful to the calling Jesus had given him. That's a freeing reminder for us as well. We don't have to carry tomorrow before it arrives. We just receive today's assignment and walk in God's grace.

Whether your calling is raising children, serving your church, caring for aging parents, leading at work, encouraging a friend, or proclaiming the gospel, the goal is the same. Not to finish famous. Not to finish comfortable. To finish faithful. And the grace that called us is the same grace that will sustain us until the end.

Faith In Action

Ask God where faithfulness is needed today instead of worrying about tomorrow. Then take that one next step with confidence, trusting that God's grace will meet you there.

Today's Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for calling us by Your grace and sustaining us each day. When the future feels uncertain, help us keep our eyes on the mission You have entrusted to us. Give us courage to take the next faithful step, wisdom to guard Your truth, and hearts that serve others with humility and generosity. By Your Spirit, help us finish well, trusting that Your grace is sufficient for every season. Amen.
