Paul has finally arrived in Rome. After arrests, riots, trials, storms, shipwrecks, and countless delays, we might expect Acts to end with Paul's appearance before Caesar. Luke has been building toward that moment for chapters. Instead, he gives us something unexpected. Paul starts preaching.

Before his legal case is ever mentioned, Paul gathers the Jewish leaders and explains why he is there. He makes it clear that he hasn't abandoned Israel or turned against his own people. In fact, he tells them that he is imprisoned "because of the hope of Israel." Everything he has proclaimed about Jesus is rooted in God's promises to His covenant people.

Some believe. Others do not. It's a familiar pattern throughout Acts. The gospel is received by some and rejected by others, but it never stops moving forward.

Luke closes his book with Paul welcoming anyone who comes to him, "proclaiming God's kingdom and teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ with complete confidence and without restriction" (Acts 28:31, CEB).

Paul is under house arrest. He's chained to a Roman guard. His freedom is limited. Yet, Luke says the gospel is advancing without restriction. That's because the true hero of Acts has never been Paul. From the opening chapter until the final sentence, Jesus has continued to work through the Holy Spirit and His Church. Governments have opposed Him. Religious leaders have resisted Him. Storms have threatened His servants. Prisons have confined His messengers. None of it has stopped the kingdom of God.

The ending of Acts feels unfinished because, in one sense, it is. Luke never tells us what happened before Caesar. He leaves the story open because the mission of Jesus is still unfolding. The commission of Acts 1:8—to be Christ's witnesses to the ends of the earth—has reached Rome, the center of the empire, but it doesn't end there. Generation after generation has carried that same gospel into new towns, new nations, and new lives. Including ours.

We aren't reading the conclusion of God's story. We're reading the chapter that invites us into it.

The same Lord who sustained Paul through every trial still reigns today. The same Spirit who empowered the early church still sends ordinary believers to bear witness. The same kingdom Paul proclaimed in Rome continues to advance—not by human strength, but through faithful people who refuse to stop speaking about Jesus.

Acts ends with an open door. Perhaps that's Luke's invitation to every reader: The story isn't over. Will you help carry it forward?
