Paul now turns directly to his own people... Israel had been given an extraordinary calling. God entrusted them with the Law, not simply so they could enjoy a privileged position, but so they could become a light to the nations. They were meant to reveal God's character by the way they lived.

But there was a problem. Some were teaching others while failing to obey the very truths they proclaimed. Their knowledge of God had become disconnected from their obedience to God. As a result, instead of drawing the nations toward the Lord, their hypocrisy caused God's name to be dishonored.

Paul's words are not meant to single out Israel for condemnation. They expose a temptation that exists in every generation of God's people. It is possible to know Scripture without allowing Scripture to shape us. It is possible to defend sound doctrine while neglecting a transformed heart. It is possible to wear the name of Christ while living in a way that makes others question whether the gospel has any power at all.

Paul had once stood on the same ground. He had every religious credential imaginable, yet it took meeting the risen Christ to show him that God's plan had always pointed beyond outward religion to inward transformation.

That is where Romans is taking us. The answer is not trying harder to appear righteous. The answer is the new covenant God promised through the prophets—a heart made new by His grace.

Our witness has never depended on being flawless. It depends on being people who are continually being transformed by Christ. When our lives increasingly reflect the One we proclaim, God's name is honored, and the light of the gospel shines clearly for others to see.

Ask yourself, Does my daily life make the gospel more believable to those around me? Identify one area where your actions need to better reflect your confession of faith, and ask the Holy Spirit to begin that work today.
