Day 213: Psalms 62-64; Romans 1
by Jonathan Merki on July 31st, 2023
Rest in God alone, my soul, for my hope comes from him.He alone is my rock and my salvation,my stronghold; I will not be shaken. My salvation and glory depend on God, my strong rock.My refuge is in God.Trust in him at all times, you people;pour out your hearts before him.God is our refuge. (Psalm 62:5-8, CSB)For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for salvation to everyone...  Read More

Day 212: Psalms 59-61; Acts 28:17-31
by Jonathan Merki on July 30th, 2023
It's testimony time. As we read through the Psalms, it is quite evident why they were considered a 'Prayer Manual.' The writers are always talking to God. Check out Psalm 61:1: "God, hear my cry; pay attention to my prayer" (CSB). In my devotional reading, I was reminded that prayer is not only my God-ward conversation, but I also need to pray that I will be attentive to God speaking to me. Yester...  Read More

Day 211: Psalms 56-58; Acts 28:1-16
by Jonathan Merki on July 29th, 2023
'Rome at Last' reads the paragraph heading in the CSB (Acts 28:11-16). Whoever wrote that must have smiled as they added the caption. Yes, this was the end destination of the promise of God, and the hope Paul expressed to the Roman Christians, though I am certain in that letter he was not anticipating imprisonment. Yes, you're sharp! You read that he was allowed to stay alone, well, not entirely. ...  Read More

Day 210: Psalms 53-55; Acts 27:27-44
by Jonathan Merki on July 28th, 2023
"Paul took some bread, and having given thanks to God in the presence of them all, after he broke it, he began to eat . They all were encouraged and took food themselves." (Acts 27:35-36)Do you pause to thank God publicly for your meals? If you do so at home, why not before every meal? This is not just a show, but a reminder that every meal is sacramental...a reminder of God's daily provision and ...  Read More

Day 209: Psalms 50-52; Acts 27:1-26
by Jonathan Merki on July 27th, 2023
"...you thought I was just like you." (Psalm 50:21, CSB)Do words or phrases ever catch your attention in your through-the-Bible reading? Today, the words above really struck me. The silence of God (re-read the Psalm) does not infer His approval of evil behavior, nor does it indicate His lack of awareness of the evil intent of the hearts of people, and it especially does not prove His failure to ju...  Read More

Day 208: Psalms 47-49; Acts 26
by Jonathan Merki on July 26th, 2023
"But make sure that in your hearts you honor Christ as Lord. Always be ready to give an answer to anyone who asks you about the hope you have. Be ready to give the reason for it. But do it gently and with respect." (1 Peter 3:15, NIRV)Excuses abound to the conviction that comes when challenged with the Truth. I know you have heard this before and will hear it again (Acts 26:24-31). Festus' exclama...  Read More
